How to Reduce Cellular Data Usage on iPhone

4 min read·

If you want to cut iPhone cellular data usage as aggressively as possible, use a combination of system settings, app restrictions, and low-data behavior.

1. Turn on Low Data Mode

This is the biggest “set it and forget it” option.

Go to: SettingsCellular → Select your SIM → Data ModeLow Data Mode

This reduces background activity, automatic updates, and streaming quality.

2. Disable Cellular Access for Most Apps

This makes the largest difference.

Go to: SettingsCellular → Scroll down and turn OFF cellular data for apps that do not need internet outside Wi-Fi.

Usually safe to disable:

  • Games
  • Social media you don’t need on the go
  • Streaming apps
  • App Store
  • Photos
  • Cloud storage apps
  • Podcasts
  • Music apps (if downloaded offline)

Keep ON only essentials like:

  • Messages
  • Maps
  • Banking
  • WhatsApp/Signal if needed
  • Browser

3. Disable Wi-Fi Assist

This secretly uses cellular when Wi-Fi is weak.

Go to: SettingsCellular → scroll to bottom → Wi-Fi AssistOFF

This alone can save a surprising amount.

4. Stop Background App Refresh

Apps silently use data in the background.

Go to: SettingsGeneralBackground App Refresh

Set to: Off, or Wi-Fi only

5. Disable iCloud Cellular Usage

Photos and backups can consume huge amounts.

Go to: SettingsPhotosCellular Data → Turn OFF Cellular Data and Unlimited Updates

Then: Settings → [your name] → iCloudiCloud Backup → Disable Back Up Over Cellular

6. Force Streaming Apps to Use Low Quality

Music

For Spotify:

  • Settings → Audio Quality
  • Set cellular streaming to Low/Normal
  • Download playlists on Wi-Fi

For Apple Music:

  • Settings → Music → Audio Quality
  • Disable Lossless
  • Use High Efficiency

Video

For YouTube and others:

  • Lower playback quality manually
  • Disable autoplay
  • Download videos on Wi-Fi

7. Turn Off Automatic Downloads & Updates

Go to: SettingsApp Store

  • Turn OFF:
    • App Downloads
    • App Updates
    • Automatic Downloads
    • Cellular Data
  • Set App Downloads to "Always Ask"

This prevents surprise large downloads.

8. Restrict Safari Data Usage

  • Go to: SettingsSafari → Enable “Block Pop-ups”
  • Disable autoplay in websites if possible
  • Use Reader Mode for articles

You can also install a content blocker to reduce ads/video loading.

9. Use Offline Features Whenever Possible

Download before leaving Wi-Fi:

  • Maps
  • Music
  • Videos
  • Podcasts

Apps like Google Maps support offline maps.

10. Turn Off Cellular Entirely for Extreme Savings

When you truly want minimal usage:

  • Swipe Control Center → tap Cellular icon OFF

Or:

  • SettingsCellularCellular DataOFF

You’ll still have Wi-Fi access.

11. Monitor What Is Actually Using Data

Go to: Settings → Cellular → Scroll down to see usage per app → Tap Reset Statistics at the start of a billing cycle to track accurately.

Maximum-Savings Setup (Most Aggressive)

If you want near-zero cellular use:

  • Low Data Mode ON
  • Background App Refresh OFF
  • Wi-Fi Assist OFF
  • Cellular access OFF for almost every app
  • Streaming quality LOW
  • Auto updates OFF
  • iCloud cellular sync OFF
  • Use offline downloads only

That setup can reduce usage by over 80–95% for many people.
