How to Install Your eSIM Before Your Trip And Land Connected

You've just landed after a long flight. Your phone says "No Service." The airport Wi-Fi wants a local number to send a verification code, which you don't have yet. You need to call a ride, check your hotel, or message your family. But you're stuck.

This happens to thousands of travelers every day. And it's entirely avoidable.

You don't need to find Wi-Fi at your destination to get connected. With two minutes of preparation before you leave home, you can have data waiting the moment your plane touches down.

What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your phone. You can't see or touch it, but it works exactly like a physical SIM, without the plastic card, the SIM tray, or the airport shop queue.

You download a data plan onto your phone before you fly, and it connects to local networks the moment you land.

Most modern phones support eSIM: iPhone XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and many others. If you're unsure, see How to Check if my Device Supports eSIM?

Why You Should Activate Before You Fly

Airport Wi-Fi sounds like a backup plan. In practice, it's unreliable:

  • It asks for a local phone number to send a verification code, which you don't have
  • Connections are often too slow to download an eSIM profile
  • Public networks aren't secure for entering personal or payment details
  • Some airports charge for access, or restrict certain types of traffic

When you install your eSIM at home before your trip, you remove the problem entirely. You land, enable your eSIM, and you're online in under 30 seconds.

Step-by-Step: Activate Your eSIM Before Your Trip

You need internet access to install the eSIM profile, but that can be your home Wi-Fi, a friend's hotspot, or your existing mobile data. No special equipment needed.

Step 1: Confirm Your Phone Supports eSIM

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
  • Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM
  • Google Pixel: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Download a SIM instead?
  • Universal method: see How to Check if my Device Supports eSIM?

If the option is there, you're compatible.

Step 2: Choose a Travely eSIM Plan for Your Destination

Pick a plan that covers your country or region, with enough data for your trip. As a rough guide:

  • Light use (maps, messaging, email): ~200–300 MB/day
  • Moderate use (social media, browsing): ~500 MB–1 GB/day
  • Heavy use (video calls, streaming): 1–3 GB/day

Travely offers plans for 200+ countries, including single-country and regional options. The price shown is the price you pay. No hidden fees, no auto-renewals.

Step 3: Install the eSIM Profile at Home

After purchasing, you'll receive your eSIM details and a QR code by email or in the Travely app. While connected to your home Wi-Fi, install the eSIM before your trip so everything is ready when you land.

You can install it in two ways:

  • Direct installation: Tap the installation button from the Travely app for automatic setup
  • QR code installation: Open your phone’s camera or eSIM settings and scan the QR code manually

Then:

  • Follow the on-screen prompts. Installation usually takes less than 60 seconds
  • Give the eSIM a name you'll recognise like "Travely France"
  • You can turn the eSIM line on immediately after installation or wait until you arrive. The plan will only activate once it connects to a supported network at your destination
  • When you’re ready to use it, make sure the Travely line is selected for Cellular Data / Mobile Data on your phone

The profile is now stored on your phone. It doesn't need internet to stay there. You're ready.

Step 4: Turn It On When You Land

After landing, before you start searching for Wi-Fi:

  • Turn off airplane mode
  • Go to SettingsCellular on iPhone, or Connections / Network & InternetSIM Manager / SIMs on Android
  • Find your Travely eSIM line and make sure it's turned on
  • Set your Travely line as your Cellular Data / Mobile Data line for internet access
  • Enable Data Roaming for the Travely eSIM line
  • Keep Data Roaming turned off on your home SIM line to avoid roaming charges
  • You can either turn your home SIM off completely, or keep it enabled for calls and SMS verification codes (OTPs). Just make sure it is not selected for mobile data usage

Within seconds, you'll see a local carrier name and signal bars. You're online.

What If You Forgot to Install Before You Left?

It happens. Here are your options, in order of ease:

  • Use airport Wi-Fi: most airports offer free access. It may ask for an email or show an ad, but it's usually enough to download an eSIM profile. Install it, turn it on, disconnect from Wi-Fi.
  • Use a travel companion's hotspot: if someone you're travelling with already has data, borrow their hotspot for two minutes to install your profile.
  • Contact Travely support: reach us on email, WhatsApp, or Telegram and we'll help you through it. Real people, fast replies.

That said: two minutes at home before you leave is always easier than any of the above.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Leaving your home SIM active for mobile data. If your regular SIM is still selected as the primary data line, it may start roaming and generate unexpected charges. Either turn it off completely or keep it enabled only for calls and SMS while setting your Travely eSIM as the mobile data line.

Deleting the eSIM too early. Most travel eSIMs can only be installed once. If you delete the eSIM from your phone before your trip is finished, you may lose access to your remaining data and might not be able to reinstall it. Keep the eSIM installed until you are completely done using it.

Buying the wrong regional plan. A Europe eSIM plan covers multiple countries, while a single-country plan only works in that specific destination. Double-check that your destination countries are included before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I activate an eSIM with no internet at all?

Yes. If the eSIM is already installed on your phone, it can usually activate automatically without Wi-Fi once it connects to a supported network at your destination.

However, you do need an internet connection initially to download and install the eSIM profile. This can be done using home Wi-Fi, mobile data, or a hotspot before your trip. That’s why it’s recommended to install your eSIM before you travel.

Will my eSIM connect automatically when I land?

Yes. Once you enable the eSIM line in settings, your phone searches for and connects to a partner network, usually within 30 seconds. If it doesn't connect, restart your phone or go to Settings → Cellular → Network Selection and choose a carrier manually.

Do I need to remove my physical SIM?

No. Keep it in. Just disable it or set it as secondary in your cellular settings so it doesn't attempt to roam. Re-enable it when you're home.

No. You can keep your physical SIM in your phone.

Just make sure your Travely eSIM is selected as the mobile data line, so all internet usage goes through it. Your home SIM will not be used for data as long as it’s not selected for mobile data.

Can I use my Travely eSIM for calls and texts?

Travely plans are data-only. For calls and messages, use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, or any VoIP app over your eSIM data. These work exactly as they do at home. For traditional calls or SMS, keep your home SIM accessible (just watch for roaming charges).

Can I use my Travely eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes. Travely plans support tethering, so you can share your connection with a laptop or tablet using the same data plan.

Is eSIM secure?

Yes. eSIM meets the same security standards as physical SIM cards, and is harder to steal, since there's no physical card to remove.

A Few Tips for a Smoother Trip

  • Download offline maps before you leave: Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline downloads. Do it on home Wi-Fi and you'll have navigation without using any data.
  • Save your booking documents offline: hotel confirmation, flight details, travel insurance. Screenshot or download them so you can access them without a connection.
  • Carry a portable charger: Enabling your eSIM uses minimal battery, but you want a full charge when you land.

Ready to Land Connected?

The process is simple: buy your plan, install at home, turn on when you land. No airport Wi-Fi. No SIM card shop. No stress.
